Supporting at Home

  • Discussing your own family traditions, beliefs and practices and encouraging your child to vocalise their beliefs.
  • Discussing the fact that other people may have different traditions, beliefs and practices and that these should be respected
  • Exposing your child to other cultures and beliefs through books, TV programmes, visits to museums and places of worship
  • There are many books, both stories and non-fiction that provide a good starting point for such discussions
  • Being aware that we can listen to other people's ideas and be open to changing our minds if other people's arguments are persuasive!
  • Being open to philosophical discussion, including discussion of broader issues such as animal welfare, people's responsibility for our world, whether certain things eg stealing can ever be excusable
  • Encouraging curiosity and the ability to question
