Our online Functional Skills English Level 1/2 course is a supportive and practical way to develop the skills you need for everyday life, work and future learning.

This tutor‑led course is delivered fully online, making it easier to learn from home at set times each week. It’s especially ideal if you:
- have been out of education for a while
- feel nervous or unsure about returning to learning
- want a gentle, supportive re‑introduction to developing English skills
- prefer learning in a friendly online environment with others in a similar position
Our tutors specialise in helping learners build confidence step by step.
What you'll learn;
You’ll develop practical skills you can use in everyday life and work, including:
- Reading for information and identifying key points
- Improving spelling, punctuation and grammar
- Writing clearly for different purposes (persuading, informing, describing)
- Building confidence in speaking, listening and communication
- Writing letters, statements, reports and more
- Taking part in discussions and delivering short presentations
Your tutor will help you set personal goals and support you throughout the 12‑week course.
Fully Funded Places Available – Check Your Eligibility!
Learners aged 19+ may be able to study for free. You could receive full funding if:
✅ You haven’t previously achieved a GCSE grade A–C / grade 4+ in English or maths
OR
✅ You’ve been assessed as currently having a skill level below grade 4, even if you achieved a GCSE or equivalent in the past
This means many adults studying English or maths with us pay nothing.

This qualification gives learners a friendly and accessible introduction to teaching. It covers key areas such as teaching roles, responsibilities, inclusive practice and assessment. Learners will gain confidence in planning and delivering sessions, with ongoing support from a dedicated tutor throughout.

End date: 13/07/2026
Delivery: Online, tutor‑led
Duration: 18 weeks, 3 hours per week
Cost: £0–£448 (depending on eligibility)
Many learners aged 19+ who live or work in Cambridgeshire on 31 August 2025 may be able to access the course fully funded if they meet one of the following:
• Ordinarily resident in the UK on the first day of learning
• Unemployed or earning below £30,491/year (Cambridgeshire & Peterborough)
• Earning below £25,750/year (non‑devolved UK areas)
If none of these apply, a fee may be charged.
Qualification achieved:
⭐ City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Education and Training
Who is this course for?
We welcome anyone who:
Has a minimum Level 1 English qualification
Is interested in moving into teaching, training or community‑focused roles
Wants to develop new skills and gain a recognised qualification to support career progression
If learners don’t currently have access to a suitable device, we may be able to help with equipment loans.

Cambridgeshire County Council is offering two funded learning opportunities aimed at supporting parents and carers. These workshops and courses focus on building confidence, supporting wellbeing and strengthening key practical skills:

Functional Skills English* - this accredited course helps adults build essential reading, writing, speaking and listening skills for life, work and supporting their families. Learners will develop skills in:
- Spelling, punctuation, reading and writing
- Speaking, listening and communication through discussions and presentations
- Reading for information and identifying key points
- Writing for different purposes (persuasive, informative, descriptive)
- Producing written texts such as statements, letters and reports
Learners will work with a tutor to set personalised learning goals and complete an accredited City and Guilds qualification, widely recognised by employers and education providers.
*n.b. Learners can still enrol on this course past the start date.
