How families can help

Discuss emotions at home, including when you are feeling angry and sad.  Let your child know that no emotion is wrong and that we can find ways in which to help ourselves get back to a calm and contented state.  There are countless beautiful picture books and children's books which deal with the whole spectrum of emotions and issues. Familiarise yourself with the Zones of Regulation, which we will be using to discuss emotions.

Story books are key in allowing children to experience the world through the eyes of others.  The Empathy Lab produces a list of books every year that aims to develop compassion and understanding

But almost any book can lend itself to discussion of how its characters are feeling and what motivates them, as well as providing diverse settings, so do talk to your child about the book as you are reading together.
